Paso Robles, California, is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and an eclectic assortment of other Italian and French varietals, especially those with high tannins and acidity that can tolerate the heat. The regions Mediterranean climate is on average 5-10F (2-5C) hotter than the Napa Valley but varies significantly depending on the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean breezes funneled through the Templeton Gap. The region’s diverse topography features rolling hills, river valleys, and plateaus, with over 30 distinct soil types ranging from calcareous limestone and shale to sandy loam and volcanic rock. It is one of California’s most dynamic wine regions.
